The energy levels of the molecule provide the basis for the qubit. Energy levels must be different enough so that they can be manipulated and read without confounding the results with data from undesired energy levels. Typically, but not exclusively the spin of a molecule is used. In a magnetic filed the energy of these levels separates and the resulting can be used as a qubit. This subject combines spectroscopy (optical and microwave) with computational chemistry, molecular design and synthesis, and quantum information processing.
